Dance at Franklin

Our mission is to be a premier pre-professional training ground for interdisciplinary performance artists in Portland, Oregon with a focus on excellence, equity, and the creation of culturally relevant content.

Dance at Franklin teaches ballet, tap, modern, jazz, musical theater, improvisation and composition from beginning to advanced levels. Led by Director Sonia Kellermann, Dance at Franklin regularly commissions guest artists to introduce students to new styles of dance and choreography. Working with local schools and companies, such as NW Dance Project, has allowed the program to present a wide range of work.

Winter Dance

January19, 20 2024

Demonstrations of dance technique in multiple  styles, strength routines, flexibility and spatial awareness exercises as well as excerpts of repertory, works in progress, and original student choreography. This performance is the principle fundraiser for Arts Alive!

Arts Alive

April 19, 20, 26, 27 2024

An interdisciplinary showcase of the talent of our student body – including music, dance, theater, poetry, and the fine and visual arts. A 'capstone project' for our dance students, Arts Alive shows the technical skills and performance abilities students have learned over the course of the year.

Dance at Franklin Company

The Dance at Franklin Company is a group of advanced students who audition for and commit to attending rigorous weekend rehearsals. While working alongside local professional dancers, Company students have the opportunity to explore more difficult and daring routines.

Franklin Musical

The Franklin High School Theater Department in collaboration with the Music Department and Dance at Franklin present a musical annually. In 2023, we will present Disney's The Little Mermaid! Thank you for your support.

NW Dance Project

Each year, NW Dance Project company artists participate in a contemporary partnering and choreographic workshop with Dance at Franklin students. This opportunity allows students to learn new techniques and be challenged by professional dancers while choreographing new work for Arts Alive.

White Bird

Since 2001, White Bird and Portland Public Schools have partnered in developing curriculum inspired by a visiting dance company. Taught through the lenses of history, anthropology, literature, art, music and dance, the curriculum sparks a passion in students who otherwise may not be exposed to contemporary culture. Each year culminates in a free performance for 2,700 students.
